Take advantage of the college career services office

Thursday, February 16, 2012
During your search for a college, you may be looking for a school that offers engaging courses, a thriving campus life and an all around great experience. Something else you should consider is what type of career services the college provides.

At this point in your life, you may feel that you have years before you have to decide on a career. In fact, you may be relying on your college experience to point you in the direction of a rewarding and fulfilling career. By your senior year in college, you should have a sense of what you want to do after graduation. And if you are a frequent visitor to your college’s career services center, you should have all the tools you need to succeed in your chosen career.

The college’s on-campus career center and corresponding Web site provide students with a variety of tools for career development. The career center is staffed with experienced career counselors who can help you take the next step in life or help you decide which path to take. For instance, at some point, you may be torn between continuing on to graduate school or spending a few years in the workforce gaining professional experience after you complete your studies. A career counselor can help you make this decision and then provide you with the necessary tools to achieve your objective.

A college with a quality career center can also make the already challenging job search a little easier on you. It will do this by bringing employers, as well as job and internship opportunities, to the student body. Visit the career center’s Web page and take a look at the events calendar for a list of on-campus career fairs or networking events, as well as links to professional associations, job search sites, and graduate school test prep sites.

Of course, just learning about a job is only one step in a lengthy, and oftentimes very challenging, process. The career center staff also provides help preparing you for job interviews through workshops or one-on-one sessions. They can also assist you in developing a strong résumé and cover letter. While you may find examples of these documents on their Web site be sure to take advantage of in-person counseling on these matters.

Whether you are going to college to fulfill a dream or you are hoping college will point you in the direction of your life’s work, the career services center can offer a helping hand.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800710173-ADNFCR
